Cyclone 'sorry' about Peterson's injury
By: Eric Petersen
He feels bad, but Chris Singleton was only doing his job when he clipped the leg of Oklahoma tailback Adrian Peterson on what may have been the final touchdown run of his career last Saturday.
Peterson broke his collarbone landing in the end zone on a spectacular 53-yard run late in OU's 34-9 victory over Iowa State. The All-American is likely lost until the Sooners' bowl game.
"I'm very sorry he's out for the season, but I was trying to save a touchdown," said Singleton, who lunged at Peterson's legs inside the 5-yard line causing him to dive for the score. "I didn't know he broke his collarbone till we were coming back on the plane."
Peterson's injury was the top news story in the state of Oklahoma, leading every station's newscast and appearing above of the fold on the next day's newspapers.
Peterson, a junior, was hoping to make a run at the Heisman Trophy after finishing second as a freshman. Most believed he was planning to turn pro after this season and be a top five pick in the NFL Draft.
Last week was more than likely Peterson's last appearance at Gaylord Memorial Stadium.
"In a way I feel responsible," Singleton said. "He dove and landed funny, but if I didn't hit his leg, he never would have dived."
